Make way for ducklings!

Omigosh! I am still shaking. Nothing like standing in the middle of the Ann Arbor-Saline/Lohr/Waters intersection waving your arms around like a maniac, surrounded by rush hour traffic. I should say *mega* intersection. Umpteen million lanes going every whichway, probably including up. It’s out there by the Saline Rd. Meijer and Tarjay and the new Border’s and all the rest of that mega-shopping-mess. And it was rush hour. Did I say that already?

The light turned yellow as I pulled up to it. I was frustrated about having to stop but I was first in line for the next green, so I settled in. There were two lanes of traffic going north and I was in the left of those, next to the left turn lane. Totally, absolutely, utterly, completely at random, I looked out my right window. I don’t know why I looked down but I did and, to my total, absolute, utter, complete HORROR, there was Mooma Duck stepping off the curb down onto the street speedway with eight or 10 cute *tiny* little baby duckies following along behind her. YIKES!!! She was walking between two vee-hickles waiting at the light. She made it over to my lane just as the light turned green. If I had not seen her, I would have run them all over! NOT a good ending to an otherwise decent, if exhausting, day. For a split second, I sat there immobilized, knowing I could not go forward through the green light but not knowing exactly what to do. One of those moments when you know that it is up to *you* to do something! I put the Dirty Old Green Honda Accord into park, turned on the flashers, opened the door and got out. I gestured to the woman in the vee-hickle behind me and yelled something like, “DUCKLINGS!” Thank the gods she had already seen them and didn’t swear at me for blocking traffic. Leaving the Dhoga sitting there with the driver-side door wide open, I walked out into the intersection and *willed* those ducks to get across the street safely. Miraculously, after what seemed like an eternity, they climbed up the opposite curb untouched and when I last saw them, they were walking nonchalantly down the sidewalk on the other side. I don’t know what their eventual destination was and I’m not sure if I *want* to know whether they got there safely. I did my best.

That is all,
Kayak Woman

P.S. Make way for ducklings!

This is an awesome story! I’m so glad you got out and stopped traffic for the duck family. 🙂 Around where I work they have “ducks crossing” road signs that are both amusing and very serious. You can be heavily fined if you do not yield to ducklings, which is, I think, as it should be.
